About us:

The Fines & Fees Justice Center (FFJC) is a national center for advocacy, policy, information, and collaboration on effective solutions to the unjust and harmful imposition and enforcement of fines and fees in the criminal legal  system. FFJC’s mission is to end abusive collection practices, eliminate fees in the criminal legal justice system, and make fines proportional to the offense and the individual. FFJC works with impacted communities, advocates, and justice system stakeholders to create an equitably-funded justice system that treats individuals fairly and ensures public safety.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, the National Advocacy and Campaigns Director will be principally responsible for the leadership, management, and development of the national advocacy and campaigns team. This position will oversee the management and execution of FFJC’s national campaigns, Free to Drive and End Justice Fees, while providing leadership and assistance to advocacy organizations across the country on these and other issues.  The National Advocacy and Campaigns Director, in conjunction with the Deputy Executive Director, will also be responsible for developing the strategy, priorities and goals for the national team, while identifying new and developing areas of focus for FFJC.  The National Advocacy and Campaigns Director will also lead the work of the national advocacy and campaigns team to build coalitions, identify state and local partners, provide technical assistance to stakeholder groups on campaign topics, and support legislative advocacy to advance the mission of FFJC. The National Advocacy and Campaign Director may also support any relevant federal advocacy.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Supervise the National Advocacy and Campaigns Team.
  • Along with the Deputy Executive Director, maintain and build relationships to advance the mission and legislative and policy goals of FFJC.
  • Grow and develop the national End Justice Fees campaign to eliminate fees in the justice system.
  • Oversee the maintenance and growth of the Free to Drive campaign to eliminate debt-based driver’s license suspensions with the Senior Campaigns Strategist.
  • Oversee the development and growth of local level fines and fees reforms efforts.
  • In consultation with the Deputy Executive Director, develop strategies to launch and execute new national campaigns, projects or initiatives that advance the mission of FFJC.
  • Oversee the management of, as well as provide strategic and technical assistance to, state and local advocates and community-based organizations, policymakers, and stakeholders on campaign-related issues and emerging topics.
  • Work with the Research and Policy Director to prioritize research and policy needs for campaign issues and emerging issues in the field.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to develop communications strategy as well as tools, resources and materials in support of national campaigns, including but not limited to one-pagers, video content and webinars.
  • Represent FFJC at conferences, meetings and legislative hearings, make presentations, testify, and participate in panel discussions, as needed.
  • Work with the Senior Campaigns Strategist to track, analyze and prioritize legislation that impacts national campaigns.
  • Work with FFJC’s State Directors on projects and initiatives related to national advocacy and campaigns, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of professional experience, including at least 5 years in advocacy at the local, state or federal level, specifically in the criminal legal system. Fines and fees advocacy/campaign experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supervising a team.
  • Ability to work with people and organizations across the political spectrum.
  • Experience with direct legislative advocacy and drafting, analyzing and commenting on legislation.
  • Experience developing advocacy materials including model bills and talking points.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with professionals in various fields, as well as community-based organizations and impacted individuals.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a growing non-profit environment.
  • Must be able to travel up 25% of the time and work occasional nights and weekends.

Compensation:

$125,000-$145,000 depending on experience, with excellent benefits including 401k matching, 100% premium coverage for health care, and generous leave policy. The comprehensive benefits package includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in a 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
