Starting October 1, 2018, New Jersey residents with outstanding criminal debt can apply to have their criminal record expunged. Previously, state law required all debt to be paid before an expungement could be obtained. Additionally, the law provides that individuals who apply for expungement must continue to adhere to a payment plan for outstanding fines, fees, and restitution. The law will also allow New Jerseyans to seek an expungement just six years after conviction, as opposed to ten.
