Inside Nevada’s Fight to End Unjust Fines & Fees
FFJC’s Nevada Team is leading a bold statewide movement to end the unjust fines, fees and debt collection practices that trap families in debt, funnel individuals into the fee-to-prison pipeline, and hinder returning citizens from succeeding upon release. Through advocacy and deep collaboration, we drive reforms that restore opportunity, expand fairness, and deliver urgent relief to Nevada’s communities.
Imagine serving 15 years in prison, only to be released with a $7,200 bill due in just 30 days. Expecting returning Nevadans to pay such steep fees isn’t just cruel — it’s nearly impossible.
In Nevada, one of the costliest states to be incarcerated in, a complex system of fees is draining millions of dollars from our most vulnerable communities. While some say fees ensure accountability, in reality, they trap people and their families in debt, long after release.
Eliminating justice fees can strengthen our communities, boost government efficiency, end the fee-to-prison pipeline, and give returning citizens the opportunity they deserve.

I have unfortunately seen individuals who have been placed for the entire six months in the Washoe County jail for traffic tickets, so we do believe this is fiscally sound and urge your support.
The Hidden Costs of Nevada’s Prison Fines & Fees
In 2023, we spoke with nearly 500 incarcerated Nevadans to uncover how prison fines and fees have impacted their health, lives, & families. They told us:
82% of respondents reported avoiding medical care simply because they could not afford it.
In 2025, we helped Nevada end this burden.
81% of respondents reported being unable to afford commissary food — even when they needed it.
79% of female respondents reported being unable to afford feminine hygiene products when needed.
In 2023, we helped end mark-ups on hygiene items.
We work to dismantle the unjust costs that hold Nevadans back.
