Dr. Brittany T. Martin is an assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Rhode Island whose research examines how legal financial obligations create cycles of debt, surveillance, and continued involvement in the criminal legal system, particularly among low-income individuals. Her published work has documented how traffic offense criminalization functions as a net-widening tool, how legal financial obligations compound across multiple jurisdictions, how privatized probation intensifies financial burdens, and how these policies disproportionately affect women navigating criminal legal system involvement.

Her scholarship appears in Criminal Justice and Behavior, The British Journal of Criminology, Feminist Criminology, Journal of Crime and Justice, and the RSF: The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences.
