Personal Narrative: Tracey

Tracey is an Orlando, Florida resident who has a perfect driving record; she’s never gotten a traffic ticket in her life. However, at the end of June 2019, she received a letter from the DMV stating that her license was suspended. When she called the DMV office, personnel informed her that she had two suspensions on her record: one for an unpaid red light ticket from a year ago and the other for more than $300 in unpaid tolls. Tracey was floored because she knew that she hadn’t gotten a ticket and she hadn’t had a car for about 9 months. She soon determined that her husband, who she was in the process of divorcing, earned the red light ticket and he also sold her tags to a stranger who racked up all the unpaid tolls.

Tracey was in the midst of having her marriage dissolved and also trying to have her former spouse served with an order of protection, because he posed a threat to her. She is also disabled and cannot support herself financially anymore so she moved to Virginia with her sister. All of this took precedence over sorting through her license suspensions and Tracey knew it would be more difficult to resolve these issues when she moved to Virginia.
