What States and Local Government Can Do To Support Immigrants’ Financial Stability

Ongoing aggressive immigration enforcement has created financial hardships for immigrant communities. The National Consumer Law Center has compiled a list of ways states, counties, and local governments can help protect immigrants from financial exploitation and other consumer abuses. It includes recommendations to protect cash economies, strengthen anti-discrimination protections, prevent fraud, expand language access, and more. It also recommends preventing interactions with the criminal legal system, especially those that result from outstanding fines and fees, driver’s license suspensions, or arrest warrants for such debt.
